We believe education is the tool with which individuals can strengthen their own communities, whether in Louisville, Belize, Nicaragua or Appalachia. Our programs focus on giving students access to a quality education wherever they may live.
The Pathway to Change Program in Nicaragua gives nearly 100 children from impoverished backgrounds an opportunity to experience an expanded and well-rounded education in Managua. Sponsors from the United States and Canada donate to provide tuition, books, school uniforms, transportation, special activities and family counseling. Thirty-five students have graduated from this program since its inception. Students have gone on to pursue careers and higher education. 39 Pathway scholars achieved outstanding averages of 90% or more in the first quarter of 2019.
The Fowler Community Center in Belize houses a preschool and daycare for local, low-income families and offers scholarship assistance to high school and college students in order to make education more accessible.
If you would like to take part in the exciting Pathway to Change program, there are many levels from which you can choose. A full sponsorship costs $2000 U.S. per year per child.
Most sponsors choose to support a specific child while others give general support to the program. For sponsors with a selected child, we will provide a recent photograph and regular updates regarding your child’s progress in school and other major life events in your child’s family.
We ask that any contact between you and your sponsored child be through Hand in Hand, and we ask that you resist the temptation to provide gifts to your sponsored child. The gift of the sponsorship itself is, after all, the gift of a lifetime.
Below, we have provided a break down of what the $2000 sponsorship includes:
• Tuition, uniforms, books and school supplies – $750
• Transportation, Children’s Center and support – $450
• Breakfast, lunch, vitamins and medical support – $450
• Tutoring, counseling and family support services – $250
• Summer camps, special events and parent meetings – $100
