Hand in Hand benefits from Mayor’s Week of Service

The Mayor’s Give A Day Week was brand-new this year – and a huge hit! Planned by Louisville Metro Mayor Greg Fischer, the event called on Louisville residents and those from the surrounding area to volunteer time at non-profit organizations, schools and churches. More than 90,000 people volunteered, including about 40 at Hand in Hand.
Volunteers sorted items from donors that we will use to help those we serve, including those in Auxier, Ky., affected by the recent tornadoes. Sometimes donations come in so quickly that just getting them sorted and ready for delivery can be a problem. We rely on our volunteers to sort items for their proper destinations.
Thanks to every volunteer who stepped up to help us. We captured a few photos of volunteers at work, which we have posted below.

Editor’s note: Recently, a group of Boy Scouts from Troop 243 in Louisville journeyed to Auxier, Ky., to help out the Hand in Hand center there, and to assist residents of the area as they recover from the recent tornado. The Boy Scout Troop meets at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Louisville. They published this article in their newsletter, and we’re reprinting it with their permission. Thank you to each and every Boy Scout who went, and thank you for passing along the article. We’re happy to share it with our supporters.

In March, we had a great opportunity to fire up the Troop bus and head to Auxier, Ky. This is a community that in good times receives help from Hand in Hand Ministries but as a result of weather, needs more help now. This puts a bit of a strain on Hand in Hand’s resources and that is where we came in.
The facility out of which HHM operates needed some additions that would allow them to serve their clients more effectively. They also needed help catching up with tasks that are generated as contributions have generously arrived. In an eight-hour period Troop 243 did the following: built a deck, built two picnic tables, sorted supplies that were in a warehouse, unloaded two trucks and sorted the donations inside, donated some materials for our work, and built and painted a new area to store recyclable materials. Many times groups are generous with their help in terms of donations of materials. However, it sometimes leaves big jobs behind for the staff.

Troop 243 left the Auxier facility much improved with less for the staff to do than when we arrived. This is one of the most amazing efforts our troop has undertaken in the time that I have been here and we should all be proud of Scoutmaster Joe Lynch who set this up. But the stars of the show of course are the boys and adult leaders in the troop who made it happen. We also had a few siblings who were also helped and we are also proud of them.

Arte y Amistad: a show of appreciation

Our Arte y Amistad program in Nicaragua was a wonderful success. We’re just delighted with the number of students who enrolled, their enthusiasm and their enjoyment of the entire process. They produced some lovely works of art and were introduced to the creative process, which we hope will stay with them their entire lives. What a thrill.

The program was led by Bill and Melanie Wolski, who traveled to Nicaragua from Colden, N.Y., to lead the classes and assist with the program. Here’s a few more photos of their class and their work on the final days of the program. Thank you to the Wolskis for going to Nicaragua, and thanks to the Dunsworths for their consistent leadership in Nicaragua. We could not have done this without both couples.

Earlier this week, we posted about Bill and Melanie Wolski’s trip to Nicaragua to teach in our Arte y Amistad (Art and Friendship) program. We applaud them for their work, and we’re happy to share a few more photos of their week here. Thanks to them and their many supporters back in Colden, N.Y. Also thanks to the children and adults in the Religious Education program at Our Lady of Lourdes in Louisville, under the leadership of Ann Pifer, who donated supplies for the classes.

Tornado relief update

There is still much to be done to clean up following the recent tornadoes in Eastern Kentucky.

There is still much to be done to clean up following the recent tornadoes in Eastern Kentucky.

It’s been more than two weeks since powerful tornadoes ripped through small communities in Indiana and Kentucky. Hand in Hand staff and volunteers have been working non-stop to support many of the small communities in Eastern Kentucky that didn’t get the attention that areas near larger cities received.

Scenes of devastation are still prevalent in eastern Kentucky near Auxier.

Penske Truck Rental generously donated the use of a large box truck to deliver the second round of food, water and relief supplies last Tuesday.

Our primary focus has been to provide food, water, personal care items and cleaning supplies to families affected by the tornado in the following areas: Riceville, Denver, Banner, Thelma, Rockhouse, Tomahawk and West Van Lear communities.

To date we have provided assistance to the following agencies for disaster relief:

Middle Fork Emergency shelter
Oscar Center
Magoffin County Community Center
New Life Worship Center

Our thanks to Penske for donating use of a truck for donated supplies.

In the first week following the storms, we provided assistance to more than 300 people in communities who weren’t receiving assistance. The following week, we delivered food boxes and cleaning supplies to four shelters and relief centers. We also traveled around many of the small communities and provided hot meals to victims and volunteers.

In the last two weeks, nine local volunteers were joined by 47 volunteers from across the state and provided meal prep, meal delivery and support of the relief efforts. Four of the local volunteers are veterans who have devoted long hours unloading trucks, giving out food and driving requested items to families in need of assistance. Prestonsburg Job Corps has also devoted time to help us with relief efforts. We’ve had local students help unload trucks, organize our supplies and load items for delivery.

With the help of volunteers, we loaded the Penske truck and sent it to Eastern Kentucky with supplies.

Continuing our efforts, Hand in Hand has scheduled three opportunities for groups to go to Eastern Kentucky to serve; April 22-25, April 25-28 (previously scheduled) and May 9-12. If you wish join any of these trips, please contact Hand in Hand’s Louisville office at 502.459.9930 or e-mail maryhelen@myhandinhand.org.

We are still collecting items for the relief effort and are specifically requesting donations of Gatorade and school supplies.

Allyson and James Williams, Co-Directors of the Auxier Center, have been asked to join the FEMA committee setting up in Prestonsburg. As relief efforts continue, Hand in Hand is now working on a long-term plan to address the needs not only of those affected by the tornadoes, but to continue our mission of helping those in need in Appalachia.

Bill and Melanie Wolski arrived in Managua on Saturday. They were met by Ed and Barbara Dunsworth, Hand In Hand’s Directors in Nicaragua. On Sunday, they went to the Children’s Center to begin setting up for the program, Arte y Amistad (Art and Friendship). 27 children have been signed up, all 9-12 years of age. They will be divided into 3 classes with each class lasting 60 minutes per day. The first part of the week will be watercolor and the other part will be decoupage.

After leaving the Children’s Center, they went to visit several families who had houses built for them by Hand In Hand and who have children in Arte y Amistad.

University of Texas trip to Nicaragua

It always amazes and inspires us when college students – or anyone really – agrees to give up a week of their time to help someone they don’t know, in another country, through Hand in Hand. Last week, a group from the University of Texas University Catholic Center went to Nicaragua, and came back with wonderful stories and photos from their trip.

We’ve collected some of the photos and a link to a blog produced by Corina Goytia, one of the students who went on the trip. There are lots of photos and reflections posted there, and you can find that blog here: http://corinanicaragua.blogspot.com/

The photos below are from Zach McKenzie. Thanks for sharing these, Zach! An album of many more photos is posted on our Facebook page.

Delivering donations to Auxier

This statue survived the tornado, but little else around it did. Volunteers cleaned up over the weekend.

This statue survived the tornado, but little else around it did. Volunteers cleaned up over the weekend.

On Saturday, March 10, eight days after tornadoes destroyed parts of Eastern Kentucky, Hand in Hand sent a 26-foot truck full of food, water, cleaning supplies and personal care items to be distributed to victims. We are very grateful to Ryder Transportation Services for donating the truck and to the many schools and individuals in the Louisville area who collected and donated the contents.

Because of the overwhelming generosity of so many people, we will soon be sending another truckload of supplies. It took volunteers almost three hours on Saturday to unload this first shipment of supplies. Our Hand in Hand directors in Auxier were absolutely overwhelmed with the spirit of giving. Volunteers immediately took food and water to some of the families who were not receiving help from any other agency.

A volunteer helps clean up last weekend.

Fr. Bob Damron, Pastor of St. Luke, in front of what is left of the church.

Libbey Smith, Chief Operating Officer, who accompanied the truck and volunteers, said that words and pictures absolutely couldn’t describe the destruction. She met with Fr. Bob Damron, Pastor of St. Luke in Salyersville. He is determined to rebuild St. Luke Church and the Open Door food pantry and clothes closet that serves the poor in the region. Fr. Damron said, “The Open Door will not be a trailer. It will be a building this time.” Hand in Hand will continue helping with the rebuilding efforts. Presently, we are storing items at Auxier so St. Luke’s clients can receive the help they so desperately need.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this endeavor. Donations are still needed for long term help in the area. You can donate safely online: www.myhandinhand.org or send a check, made out to Hand in Hand Ministries, to 2225 Steier Lane, Louisville, Ky. 40218. Donations of diapers, baby items, personal care needs – especially feminine hygiene products, and cleaning products may be brought to the Hand in Hand office on Steier Lane in Louisville during regular daytime business hours.
